Intro

Keeping track of scuba diving data and logged dives is essential for divers to document their underwater adventures. OSEAN is a web design project created by Angie and Richan, two members of the DG-Meteor team who are also divers. This project aims to transform traditional paper diving logs into a creative digital format. It maintains accurate data of the diving experience while allowing creativity to flow among the logs by incorporating infographics, fun illustrations, and animations. This enables divers to store and share their diving journeys without being restricted by geographic boundaries.

Background:

OSEAN was inspired by our own scuba diving experiences, learning from other experienced divers' logging practices, and exploration of current diving logs on the market, which often prioritize practical and statistical use. As designers and animators, scuba diving inspires us in many ways—the sensation of water, the intricacy of equipment, and the life beneath the surface. We envisioned a diving log that fulfills creative aspirations and shares our experiences, encouraging more people to discover and potentially join the sport of diving.

In addition to OSEAN: Digital Diving Log, we have also created a paper book for those who prefer traditional logging experiences. This book breaks practical boundaries by offering divers a chance to express creativity. It includes pre-prepared components such as reef life stickers, coral and lettering that align with the branding and design ethos of the OSEAN website.

The next phase of OSEAN involves launching a public platform where divers can log their own experiences. This will enable divers to share their adventures and allow viewers to explore them, providing a creative digital log that unlocks the mysteries of the ocean and invites everyone to embark on the journey.

Design Statement:

OSEAN is a diving log that utilizes user experience, infographics, data, illustrations, and animations to recreate the journey and memories for those who log their dives. It maintains the traditional purposes of a diving log, such as tracking time, location, depth, safety stops, equipment, and diving journeys. Additionally, users can add illustrations and animations of the marine life they discover or the wrecks they explore.

We use a minimal color palette of two for the overall design. The light and dark modes represent day and night dives, varying the time and mimicking the experience of gradually diving deeper into the water to explore the depths and creatures in the blue.

Lines and grids maintain the feel of traditional charting and logging, providing a guideline and information system that bridges the digital logging experience with OSEAN. Marine life swims between the lines, symbolizing the exploration and observation of life in the other 70% of the Earth.

Our goal is to create a platform that shares diving journeys not only to the existing divers, but also to introduce, inspire, and attract potential divers to join the sport. Through engaging illustration and infographics, OSEAN aims to open up this exciting journey to more people, creating a fun and educational experience for everyone who enjoys or will enjoy scuba diving.

OSEAN brings the classic paper diving log to life digitally, hosted on Webflow, utilizing code and development to enhance the user experience and interface designed by our product team. The user experience focuses on conveying information that divers learn, making it accessible and easy to share with a broader audience. Integrating Lottie animations, initiated and recorded with a GoPro underwater, OSEAN identifies marine creatures and reimagines them in its unique brand style—a simple, humorous line art that captures the essence of underwater life.
